what is somatic therapy?

Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach to healing that works with the profound connection between your mind, body, and nervous system. The word "somatic" comes from the Greek word soma, meaning body — and somatic therapy is built on the understanding that trauma, stress, grief, and unresolved emotion don't just live in our minds. They live in our bodies, too.

When we experience overwhelming events or chronic stress, the nervous system stores those experiences as physical patterns — tension, bracing, numbness, hypervigilance. Traditional talk therapy can help us understand what happened. Somatic therapy helps us access embodied healing

In somatic therapy sessions with Emily, you'll be gently guided to slow down and tune into your body's sensations, impulses, and inner signals. Drawing from her training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy (SPI), trauma-informed yoga, and nervous system healing, Emily creates a safe, collaborative space where your body becomes a trusted source of wisdom rather than something to manage or override.
